Local Feature: Barb's Handmade Pierogi & Mamakas Taverna

Barb's Handmade Pierogi

Founding her company in 2014, Barbara McLaren had one mission; put simply, to provide her customers with nothing less than an authentic, handmade pierogi. Since then, Barb and her team have strived to use seasonal, local ingredients of the highest quality to produce authentic handmade pierogies with a choice of tasty fillings in a soft dough. Everything is done in small batches so quality control is best achieved, and machinery is not used on the dough because of its delicate makeup.

She is famous for her handmade pierogies; dumplings of unleavened dough wrapped around a savoury filling. These morsels of goodness once thawed and fried in organic butter are an amazing treat. With fillings like Wilton extra old cheese, caramelized onion & cremini mushroom, garlic and locally smoked bacon, you cannot go wrong. Barb has recently started adding other meal options such as handmade cabbage rolls and borscht to her product line. On cold days like these, Barb's belly warming supper options are sure to do the trick.

Barb's Handmade Pierogis are available at numerous local grocers around Kingston. Follow her on Facebook and check out where you can pick up a bag of these delicious dumplings near you.

Mamakas Taverna

Treat yourself to an authentic Grecian meal right here in Toronto. Just a few blocks away from our Queen Street location sits a picturesque spot bringing a little Mediterranean warmth to your chilly evening.

Mamakas is an elegant 85-seat Greek taverna on Ossington Avenue. Owner Thanos Tripi brings a fresh, authentic approach to Aegean food, offering classical Greek dishes against a contemporary canvas. Each plate is thoughtfully crafted to evoke the way Thanos’ grandmother cooked, inviting guests to explore the Greece he grew up with through food, art and music.

Meant to mimic an open market, the room is built of white concrete blocks creating an effect similar to the stucco seen throughout Greece. Mamakas is a nod to heritage, history and family memories – the daily trip to the market for ripe and fragrant tomatoes. Visiting a trusted butcher for fresh paithakia, and the local fishmonger for the daily catch.

Recipes passed down through generations. Honest Greek fare with a modern twist. Designed to share. Everything just as Thanos’ family has done through the ages.
